  1. Ohhhhhh that's interesting. Doesn't the NFL do a lot of this kind of stuff? Restructuring contracts to lower cap hit. I think it's brilliant, albeit complicated for the fans. Gives teams so much more flexibility. I think the NHL would see a lot more trading (even though the NFL sees virtually no trading).
  2. Extremely difficult to track and manage progammatically. All of our salary info pulls from a central database (which pulls directly from Capfriendly), so anything that makes an AAV vary from league to league is pretty much a non-starter. It's a fun idea, in general... just logistically challenging.
  3. Really hoping will smith ends up in Philly. also sure I’m not the first one to make that joke
  4. Protecting Blueger seemed like the right move at the time... hindsight is 20/20. Carter 100% should have been exposed, and I think there's a really decent chance he'd have been taken. Either Carter or McCann. Either way, there was no need to lose a heart and soul player like Tanev. People hate on Carter, but he was a really excellent acquisition that year (especially at that price), and was decent last year. The contract they gave him this year was fine... again, hindsight is 20/20. Also, the Rakell acquisition was solid. And re-signing the big three was, ultimately, what most people wanted, and he did it pretty well. All that said... trading Matheson and Marino was bad work (although I don't hate the Marino deal). Re-signing Kapanen was a huge mistake (that's not hindsight, either...). The McGinn deal was stupid. The Granlund trade was stupid. The Bonino trade was stupid (albeit pretty cheap).
  5. You could draft Gretzky Goals or Gretzky Assists.
  6. Four scoring titles on assists alone is insane... I can see why fantasy leagues used to have to split him into 2 people.
  7. “No more good” is pretty poor English. Good is rarely a noun, and saying “no more” instead of “less” implies that the noun has ceased to exist. I think “no more goodness” might be better, depending on context. Or “less good”, although that is best used if “good” is an adjective. And yes, I listen to about 8 minutes of this podcast every day. Takes me a while to get through an episode. And sometimes the part i listen to on a given day ends up being exclusively about Scott’s bodily functions (or just his body in general). But I keep coming back.
  8. Re: takeaways… I think Scotty’s making valid points here. But I want stats that are easily found in multiple places (I.e. nhl.com, ESPN, tsn, etc). Are you able to find “first goals” there? The answer might be yes… I haven’t looked. I also don’t want stats that count multiple times. Score a first goal and you’ve just gone +1 in 4 categories, maybe even 5 if it’s a shorty. (G, SOG, STG, +\-, in addition to first goal) and I want stats where you get a lot in a week (more than 20, ideally, but I’ll settle for 10+). Takeaways checks those three boxes. you’ve got this fourth criterium of wanting to be able to see it visually. I get it, but those other three are more important, imo. find me an offensive stat that checks all four boxes and I’m game!
  9. “I know the tone of your ass when you walk away” 🤣
  10. That's amazing. I've been wondering about the fantasy implications of this, especially for like trade advice or start/sit advice. it's inevitable
  11. Binnington also does well in Fantrax rating by virtue of his GP (38 GP to Vanecek's 32 and Jarry's 27). That gets him the appearance more saves (even though his saves per game is lower than Jarry) and more wins (even though his win percentage is way worse than the others.. .473 to Jarry's .592 and Vanecek's .656). Of course, GP is not an irrelevant stat here... his GP is his most valuable attribute, indicating his solidity as a #1 and his durability.
  12. OK regarding the Binnington vs. Jarry vs. Vanecek conversation... the important piece of information that you didn't consider is average deviation. In head-to-head, a goalie's predictability is almost as important as the actual tracked stats. So if you look at how much, on average, Binnington performs better or worse than his average, you can judge his inconsistency... That inconsistency can kill you in a matchup...
  13. Fantasy First Hockey League actually has a nice ring to it. FFHL. “The Eff”.
  14. I’m very interested in a “high activity” league @Festivus Maybe next year…
  15. We talked briefly in the episode about when jagr almost came back to Pittsburgh in 2011, but I’d forgotten how close it really came. Well-timed article on the Athletic this week had this little note from the Pens beat reporter: “You may remember a little thing back in 2011 that we called #jagrwatch. Man, those were the days. On the night we believed Jagr was actually flying to Pittsburgh (turtles on the runway at JFK, etc.) I went to Pittsburgh International to wait for him. He never showed, of course. But it was OK. There were hundreds of Penguins fans there to greet him, and I ended up chatting with them until 2 or 3 a.m. It was actually a great experience, just a bunch of Penguins fans hanging out at the airport to greet Jaromir Jagr. And it’s not like there wasn’t reason to think it was happening. At the NHL Draft a few days earlier, Dan Bylsma removed a pen and paper from his pocket and showed me what he was going to do with Jagr on the power play. (Sid and Jagr rotating from the goal line to the right-wing wall, Evgeni Malkin on the left point, Kris Letang running the show up top, and James Neal in the slot/net front).”
  16. Ultimately, shooting (like batting, golfing, or punching) is all about hip movement, right? And the hip movement really is similar for all three movements. So it's odd that most people do hockey differently from the other two. Also, my shot is garbage, so maybe that's why. Maybe I should go back to righty.
  17. I guess the implication is that the maple leafs are like a minor league club compared to the lightning. But it's very 2019...
  18. Love that you got nothing but crickets on this one.
  19. Fantrax has a cool stat called "Big goals" or something like that.. game winning or game tying goals late in the game/OT. I love the stat, but I hate that you can't find that stat anywhere but on Fantrax.
  20. Also, there’s nothing emotional about a “game winning goal” in the first period of a 6-2 game
  21. Couple episodes behind, but just wanted to call out that you can’t at once complain about goalies having too much value, and takeaways being dumb. Yeah, takeaways are super dumb, but show me a better offensive stat that can replace it… if you get rid of it, goalies just become even more valuable.
  22. Just shy of $500k, according to my calculation. Although that's based on today's exchange rate, and the inflation of USD. This is getting complicated! Also worth noting that players today don't actually make what they're scheduled to make with the whole escrow thing...
