I think Buffalo has had lots of luck. In the last 6 drafts they picked in the top 8 six times! 1st this year two 2nd's and three 8th picks. How many top ten picks does one team need to improve?

Exactly. Buffalo needs to do a better job developing the talent that they have. Their issue has not been getting the players.

We could say the same about Edmonton....I think Bill only mentions it because of them having great odds at McDavid and getting Eichel. Not saying most teams wouldn't be thrilled to have Eichel, but there is certainly a gap.

Getting back to developing talent. I think Mittelstadt is their best option since the Eichel pick. The unfortunate part is as we stand right now it looks like the Reinhart and Nylander picks missed the mark on what they were hoping for in short term production. Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but sheesh did they miss a few names that were available. I also don't think it's necessarily the top picks that are killing them the most, but the middle round selections. Looking at some of the top teams in the playoffs right now, they are being driven by a mixture of top talent and then middle round developed options and looking at the picks Buffalo made in those areas....yikes.

I'll just leave this here (first, first-round picks). I don't know what I'm trying to say - if anything.

  • Pittsburgh (2002-2006): 5th, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd. Cups since 2002 = 3
  • Edmonton (2010-2015): 1st, 1st, 1st, 7th, 3rd, 1st. Cups since 2010 = 0
  • Chicago (2005-2008): 7th, 3rd, 1st, 11th. Cups since 2005 = 3
  • Tampa Bay (1992-2001): 1st, 3rd, 8th, 5th, 16th, 7th, 1st, 8th, 3rd. Cups since 1992 = 1
  • Boston (2006-2011): 5th, 8th, 16th, 25th, 2nd, 9th. Cups since 2006 = 1
  • Los Angeles (2004-2009): 11th, 11th, 11th, 4th, 2nd, 5th. Cups since 2004 = 2
  • Buffalo (2012-2018): 12th, 8th, 2nd, 2nd, 8th, 8th, 1st. Cups since ever = 0.
  • Vancouver (2013-2017): 9th, 6th, 23rd, 5th, 5th. Cups since ever = 0.

Speaking specifically with the Penguins because that's what I know the best. Look how many years it took from 2002 to get that 1st of the most recent 3 cups. Heck, it was even 3 years after that most recent 2nd overall pick. So it may not be unreasonable to expect both Buffalo and Edmonton to take another few seasons to turn those picks into something close to a cup.

so  who does montreal  want to slip to them,  zadina or svechnikov, Id  say  svechnikov?

Whether it's Zadina or Svechnikov, I look forward to many years of arguing what position he should play and ruining his confidence in the process. Let's get it started right away, here on Capwise. Zadina is a renowned sniper, but I say he should play goalie!

Svech or Zadina?

From everything I've read, there seems to be a fairly wide consensus that Svechnikov is the second best prospect in the draft.

I guess there is a small chance that Carolina picks Zadina because of the fact that they already have Martin Necas in the system and the two have shown chemistry at the World Junior Championship.

I hope they do. Not only does Svechnikov seem like a better player for my Habs, I think Bergevin and his posse would have a harder time passing on him than on Zadina. If the choice is Zadina, I'm afraid they'll do something silly like drafting Tkachuk or a D.
