  1. Trotz was seen getting off a flight in Newark...have to think Lou rolls out the red carpet then uses it as leverage for Tavares. Then uses that to hopefully persuade Carlson and Grub to follow their former head coach.
  2. So Hoffman gets traded to a team that also has a Karlsson....who happens to wear 68....boy is his fiancé going to be confused.
  3. Senators really need to consider giving their pick to the Avs this year. Looking more and more likely that they are strong contenders for Hughes next year...
  4. Got some insight on both the watch party and the weekend's antics from a friend who is a Caps fan. He, his wife, and some friends went to the screen watch party and said it was an incredible atmosphere. His only disappointment is that they had NO bathroom options for people watching in the streets. All the bars were on a "1 in, 1 out" policy forcing people to wait in multiple hour lines just to find a bathroom. As a result he mentioned seeing many people finding a corner or alley to go down and try to avoid being seen. Definitely a little bit of an oversight by DC, but hey...they likely didn't expect to have THAT many people outside the arena. He said it was amazing how minimal the antics were after the win too. The only thing he saw was people moving the traffic barricades, which caused for a little confusion but no burning, looting, rioting, etc. So this is when things get crazier because he runs into John Carlson's friend (mentioned meeting this guy a few times before at the same bar) and casually mentioned they were going to continue drinking by the pool at their hotel. Fast forward a little bit and Carlson's friend mentions he will be right back and when he returns Brent Johnson is with him. My buddy sent me a bunch of pictures of them just shooting the breeze with Brent Johnson and having a few beers. Same friend and his wife went to DC on Saturday to grab a few drinks and be in the atmosphere. As they got down there people kept mentioning that the cup was down the street. Yes, yes it indeed was because this was the now famous water fountain situation. Oshie, Vrana, Kuz, Ovi, Holtby, Wilson, and Backstrom were just hanging out letting everyone get pictures with them and the cup. Then they decided to jump into the fountain, where Wilson handed his phone and wallet to my friend's wife. No seriously.... Apparently he didn't remember it and started yelling at Ovi because he thought Ovi had taken it. They were both standing there when Vrana decided he was getting a tattoo. I was absolutely blown away by how cool all of this sounded. Just a bunch of local heroes letting a whole city enjoy the party. As much as I want to be mad the Caps won this year, I simply can't given how much raw emotion and excitement has stemmed from all this.
  5. Of the three, I think he is the one you would rely on defensively which gives him the advantage there. I also believe that he is the most likely to just absolutely take over a game. Crosby and Ovi can change the outcomes of games, but Malkin has that "ohhhhhhhhh sh*t" gear that he shifts into and you can't help but stand up each time he has the puck.
  6. Oh boy, that one must hurt to admit...
  7. How many guys have a backhand strong enough to beat a goalie in that situation though? Yes Ward was poorly positioned, but you cannot argue against the whole sequence being domination by Malkin.
  8. No one could take that away from Malkin. He was an absolute MACHINE all season long and then that sick backhand goal on Ward to get a hat trick....just got chills. Also...shoutout to the Versus TV channel lol
  9. Yes, Kuz is deserving but let's think about this...Ovi's first time in the finals, performs pretty well, and they win. No brainer that it goes to Ovi simply because he's the captain and finally got the monkey off his back for a championship.
  10. Should he be suspended? Yes Will he be suspended? No Had a friend text me last night and say that NHL can't suspend him if the refs are going to ignore the Reaves crosscheck prior to his goal. Eye for an eye or something...love listening to them stick up for him.
  11. See, I am on the other side of the argument as you James. I think Maatta is the one who stays and Letang is the one shopped. I am thinking that this could be the time for it, even though it would be a tough pill to swallow. Teams are lining up for Karlsson and Carlson. Only two teams are going to overpay in a trade and then overpay in FA for those guys. So then GMJR comes in with another option...let the dominos fall and see who comes calling with some defensive options/picks. I also think the Brassard trade wasn't a total swing and miss yet. If he was a rental and not signed next year, definitely. Since he has a full next season with the team, this isn't necessarily a terrible trade yet. We never know what a goalie prospect will be until he becomes a NHL starter...or not. We also never know what type of player a team will draft in the 1st round. PS - I flat out hate Ruhwedel. I feel like I know him personally with how many times I have to say "be better Chad" to my TV.
  12. Love this. 1 wasn't going to get the message across, just be a nuisance. Now he can't contribute until game 7 if it gets there.
  13. Most Caps fans certainly aren't sold on them right now, but any Pens fan who has watched them consistently this year has noticed major flaws in the armor and its rather concerning.
  14. Always the hot topic. I just don't see Malkin getting dealt. They have the right assets in the system to warrant him still being a viable center for the younger wingers. Just don't see them getting the value that everyone would hope for. Letang on the other hand is an interesting one. Could he be moved and turned into two/three up and coming defenders? It's clear that Schultz/Dumo/Maatta are capable of being top 4 in this system and Schultz can run the PP. The Big Rig is a great option on the 2nd or 3rd pairing with his physicality and presence on the ice. The concerning part is that right now Ruhwedel is a consistent starter and when he isn't in, the next "best" option is Hunwick. Turning Letang into pieces that round out the top 4 and bottom 6 would be a smart idea. I think Hagelin might be in the mix for a move like this as well.
  15. I don't know if they are necessarily beating Boston/Tampa or the winner of the west, but I do think this is their year to beat the Pens. This is Penguins team is wildly inconsistent and it's tough to know which version will show up each night...hell each period is a gamble sometimes. Lots of time left, but....
  16. Speaking specifically with the Penguins because that's what I know the best. Look how many years it took from 2002 to get that 1st of the most recent 3 cups. Heck, it was even 3 years after that most recent 2nd overall pick. So it may not be unreasonable to expect both Buffalo and Edmonton to take another few seasons to turn those picks into something close to a cup.
  17. We could say the same about Edmonton....I think Bill only mentions it because of them having great odds at McDavid and getting Eichel. Not saying most teams wouldn't be thrilled to have Eichel, but there is certainly a gap. Getting back to developing talent. I think Mittelstadt is their best option since the Eichel pick. The unfortunate part is as we stand right now it looks like the Reinhart and Nylander picks missed the mark on what they were hoping for in short term production. Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but sheesh did they miss a few names that were available. I also don't think it's necessarily the top picks that are killing them the most, but the middle round selections. Looking at some of the top teams in the playoffs right now, they are being driven by a mixture of top talent and then middle round developed options and looking at the picks Buffalo made in those areas....yikes.
  18. I have a co-worker who dates someone who works for Monumental Sports. She got free tickets to the game and a few people backed out. Even though they were specifically told "do not give these tickets to Penguins fans" she was still nice enough to break the rules for me. I was in line to get a beer when Kuzy scored...17 freaking seconds. Of course that made my reception into the section even less welcoming even though I have gotten smart and started wearing my pajama jersey Jagr when in DC. Most leave me along when they see it because it's hard to hate on that guy. Most of the 1st and 2nd was enjoyable hockey. Honestly, the score should've been about 6-4 either way going into the 3rd. A quick goal into the 3rd period and everyone in the arena thought that this was in the bag. Well, except for the guy in front of me who yelled "we want blood" all night long. Seriously. Hornqvist's goal brought in a little bit of doubt. Crosby's goal took the air completely out of the building. Guentzel's goal cleared seats. Just like that. For about 6 minutes my heart was beating like I was doing cardio because I did not want to hear the siren go off or sit through another full intermission on a work night for that matter. But tonight was not going to be that night...a tradition like no other could take place:
  19. I do have a gmail that I could switch notification emails to, but I am not sure if that would be more or less of a pain for James to switch to.
  20. I wish it was just that. I had to make the Capwise Hockey email a "VIP" in iCloud so that I would receive them in my Capwise folder. The PM emails don't exist in any folder...
  21. Hey byz...I am still not getting emails notifications for PMs. Not the worst thing in the world, but those emails were a nice little reminder that I had a message to read/respond to
  22. Adidas jerseys and a handful of shirts/sweatshirts/jackets went live today on the NHL site. Very disappointed that it is going to cost $225 to get a jersey with a name on it. Even the other stuff is a hard pill to swallow. I know that is the trend of apparel, but it is becoming very expensive to be a fan. We are all in the same boat and likely have a whole wardrobe dedicated to our team. I have a whole drawer, section of the closet, and row of hats solely dedicated to the black/yellow of Pittsburgh. Was really looking forward to the Adidas apparel because I personally love their gear as I have some of it for random teams in various sports. Anyone else a little disappointed in the price points? Really hoping these fanatics branded jerseys are not total junk....
  23. Heres to another year of attempting to steal a banner from Salros and Duffy!
  24. http://www.dobberhockey.com/hockey-home/the-dobotomy/a-statement-from-darryl-dobbs-dobber-regarding-his-health/ This one hits a little close to home. My father had Multiple Myeloma Cancer, which is also a bone marrow type of cancer. At the time of diagnosis they had given my father a handful of months to live, but he waged war against the diagnosis and found a way to survive it for closer to 5 years. This was nearly 15 years ago and medicine has advanced quite a bit since then. Some of the clinical trials that my father was involved in are still continuing to this day and have paved the way for a lot of different options for people diagnosed with all types of cancers. My father was an only child without a way of receiving a stem cell transplant forcing the doctors try experimental replacement options by using his own stem cells and essentially reprogramming them to attack the cancer cells rather than let it spread. I strongly encourage anyone willing and able to join the list of available donors (Dobber has a link for the Canadian options). For us Americans, we can use this link.
  25. I worked with an independent league baseball team in York, PA right after I graduated and had the chance to meet two pretty big local and national names. First was Brooks Robinson. He was part of the founding fathers so to speak of the team and we had statues of him outside the front gates as well as the whole outside plaza named after him. I had the pleasure of being in an exclusive meet & greet with one of my clients and Brooks. So many crazy old time baseball stories. I also had the opportunity to meet and work with John Kuhn (Green Bay Packers) for our All-Star game. We flew him in from GB secretly and surprised his whole family (he is from Dover, PA which is close to York) when he showed up to throw out the first pitch. Didnt meet him personally, but I played college football against Cecil Shorts III (Houston Texans) when he was with Mount Union. We played them in the playoffs in 2010. Didn't end well for us.
