Salros
When you can sell to a player he could have the Cup for a day if he stays, you can pull off a deal like this one.
Ralphdog
Reminiscent of the Kucherov bridge deal, and that one was largely credited to the genius of Steve Yzerman. Maybe guys are indeed taking less for a shot at getting their name on the cup.

orphans
Though he finally signed today, Brayden Point won’t be on the Tampa Bay Lightning roster anytime soon. GM Julien BriseBois told reporters on a conference call that Point had hip surgery earlier this summer and is not expected to be back in the lineup until late October. While it’s obviously bad news that he won’t be ready for opening day, this may actually give the young forward enough time to get his game right after missing most of training camp already. The Lightning will have to make due without him for now and hope he can come back at full-strength in a few weeks.

Trev It's not as much as most people think. Only 17% difference between the top and bottom NHL cities. And that's before you factor in the fact that they pay tax for the state the game takes place in, so now we're down to an 8.5% difference. Now, if their primary residence is their summer home it gets even more complicated. Not to mention Canada and the US recently signed a tax treaty which helps out some players. This is a great article that unpacks the tax thing, and goes on to mention everything Tampa has done well to get these great contracts (which only really started happening in 2017): http://faceoffcircle.ca/2019/04/05/tampa-bays-process-isnt-complicated-so-why-does-it-work-so-well/
djb738
Read that Points contract is equivalent to a $8.5M/year contract in Toronto.

The point is more that it’s not an easy answer, like we all want it to be. The tax amount isn’t easy to calculate. Neither is the reason he would sign for so less. Lots of factors at work. Though isn’t 8.5% of 6.75 million like 500k?

I believe I read somewhere that the rate that the contract will get taxed at in Florida is around 39% where the rate that the contract would be taxed in Toronto would be around 53-55%

Half it because they are taxed on where the game takes place. 7% of 6.75 isn’t 1.

Same thing was said with the Stamkos contract that the equivalent contract with Toronto would have been $2M+ than what he signed for with Tampa.
