byz
Just a general thread, looking for some insights on your favourite teams. How happy are you with your team's draft? Oilers Holloway @ #14 - I was really hoping for Jarvis at 14, but of course Carolina snipes him right before. Holloway - a physical, plus skating C/LW - likely doesn't have top-end offensive upside, but his physicality & two-way acumen could be a perfect fit alongside two offensive stars. I'm usually a fan of drafting best player available over fit, but I don't think there was much separation between him and other options at this point. Even if it takes him 2-3 years, he should be a really good fit somewhere in our top 9, likely top 6. I bet he peaks at 60 points assuming he can be a wingman to McD or Draisaitl. Carter Savoie @ #100 - Big fan of this pick, notably because he's a local kid. Savoie is a 5'10 offensively skilled winger who played in the AJHL last year and will be going the US college route. While he lit up his league last year, we've seen a lot of guys out of the Junior A leagues flame out after their junior career in a hurry, so his upside is a total wildcard at this point. Ty Tullio @ #126 - In contention for having one of the "best alliteration names in the draft", Ty Tullio is a 5'11 center slated to go higher in the draft, but fell due to skating concerns. Leans more playmaker than other player type, it'll be interesting to see if he's able to lead his Oshawa Generals in the OHL without his overage linemates. Maxim Berezkin @ #138 - High-skilled LW in Russia, skating is his weakness, seems like a regional scout's pick. Filip Engaras @ #169 - High work ethic center but low skill - skating a weakness. Also seems like a regional scout's pick. Jeremias Lindewall @ #200 - No clue on this RW, hoping for Zetterberg. Overall, I wouldn't expect much pop from this group, but I'm hoping they're able to fill depth positions among the Oilers lineup in 2-4 years. A solidly average draft considering our capital available. What about your team?
originaljroc
Agree with your thoughts. Definitely some guys who can impact the game in ways the Oilers need it most, although I'm higher on Holloway and Savoie as potential top-six guys who can produce offence as well. I've heard a few people knocking the AJHL after their picks (not saying you are), but a lot of great players have come out of there (Lanny McDonald, Mark Messier, Dany Heatley, Mike Comrie and Cale Makar, obviously). And Savoie just scored the most goals the AJHL has seen in a season since 2001. I don't care where you play, if you score 53 goals in 54 games, you have some talent that should translate. Apparently he fell because of his defensive play, but that can be taught, so I'm optimistic.
Ydomat
I’m pretty happy with the Blues draft. Roster wise they are in good shape! Especially if Perunovich makes the team as expected.
Zipper
I liked the Canucks pick of Jurmo at 82. I know some see him similarly to the guy the Wings got at 32.
Bagwell
ROUND 1 #4 Detroit Red Wings Lucas Raymond (F) HELL YEAH! Super pumped for this guy. I think he has the potential to be a top-line wing. I read a few reports who weren't so high on him, but I definitely am. WOULD RATHER: No one (maybe Jake Sanderson) ROUND 2 #32 Detroit Red Wings William Wallinder (D) I don't know much about this guy, but a lot people had him projected to go in the first round. From what I've read he is a fast, two-way defender. I'll take those all day. WOULD RATHER: Marat Khusnutdinov #51 Detroit Red Wings Theodor Niederbach (F) Love it again. I wish Torgersson would have fallen so the Wings could've gotten both, but this is who I wanted at this spot. I'm not mad. WOULD RATHER: No one (maybe Emil Andrae) #55 Detroit Red Wings Cross Hanas (F) Again, I'm not super familiar with this gent. I've read a few scouting reports since the draft and they are all over the place. He's a line-driver. Then, he's inconsistent. He scored a lacrosse goal, so that's cool. I'll be watching his progress for sure. WOULD RATHER: Tristen Robins ROUND 3 #63 Detroit Red Wings Donovan Sebrango (D) Apparently a physical, two-way defender with a good first pass. Average skater with lapses in judgement according to one scout. We'll see! WOULD RATHER: Joni Jurmo #70 Detroit Red Wings Eemil Viro (D) I like this one. I've listened to a few podcasts that had very good things to say about him. Not the best offensive d-man, but skates very well and is good with puck possession. WOULD RATHER: Jean-Luc Foudy or Zion Nybeck ROUND 4 #97 Detroit Red Wings Sam Stange (F) Unknown on my end, but apparently a shoot-first winger that was passed over in the last draft. No idea. WOULD RATHER: Eamon Powell #107 Detroit Red Wings Jan Bednar (G) We needed a goalie prospect and I am very happy with this one. The Wings love their Czech goalies. Goalies are a crapshoot though. WOULD RATHER: No one (maybe Sean Farrell) ROUND 5 #132 Detroit Red Wings Alex Cotton (D) ROUND 6 #156 Detroit Red Wings Kyle Aucoin (D) ROUND 7 #187 Detroit Red Wings Kienan Draper (F) #203 Detroit Red Wings Chase Bradley (F) I don't know anything about the last four, but these guys were still on the board: Samuel Johannesson, Kasper Puutio, Ronan Seeley, Alexander Pashin, Viktor Persson....really a shame. Ha!
