Martin will be gone I figure.  Cracknell could be with the Marlies.  I think Lindholm at Center, Brown and, well an open spot for now.  I like the Grundstrom kid but not sure he’s ready.  Leivo?, meh, maybe.  I wouldn’t be upset with keeping Martin but he seems halfway out the door and his salary needs to go before next season.  I figure Grundstrom is the new Uncle Leo come next year.  I also really like that 3rd line.  All 3 are defensively responsible yet with speed and a scoring ability.

This is a fun time to be a Leaf fan.

Oh yea, I forgot about Leivo. He’ll work as a 4th line centre. Still lots of other talent in the minors who might work with him and Brown.

  2. I can't believe no one has thought of this before.  It's so simple and seems to fit exactly in the rules, but against the spirit of the rules.

This has Laurence Gillman written all over it.  He was just hired by the Leafs.  When he was with the Canucks he thought up the Luongo contract, and the idea to keep a player on IR from the trade deadline onward in order to stay under the cap... and then just bring the player back for the playoffs (Sami Salo).   He was also previously hired by the league to aide with expansion, presumably to make sure there were no loopholes in the deal.

  3. Here are some more stats to suggest Hamilton is better. In fact, they back up the statement that Hamilton is elite. IMO you don’t trade elite unless you’re getting elite back, but there must be more to the story that we don’t know about.

Apparantly Someone said on the radio that Hamilton went to the museum when the rest of the team went out for dinner together. That doesn’t sound too bad...

Just read a good article on the trade on SportsNet. From Calgary's perspective, Hamilton was a good player with the wrong attitude. Flames traded his brother last January and Hamilton started making it clear he wasn't happy there. Good chance Flames were going to lose Ferland next summer anyways. And Fox had made it pretty clear he had no interest in coming to play for Calgary. Wouldn't come to play with them this year and committed to go back to college for another year. If he did that for a fourth year they'd lose him. So the topline is that they moved a high skill/bad attitude player, a gritty guy they really liked but might have only kept for one more year and a high quality prospect who may have never played for them.

LIndholm may really shine with Gaudreau and Monahan as linemates. Maybe not. Hanifin has basically the same numbers as Hamilton did in his first three years, so lots of potential there.

I'm not saying Calgary won this trade - but not sure they got destroyed either.

Ah, the Fox news does help a bit, but it

still seems like poor asset management. I think some team out there would be willing to pay for him.

I’m probably harder on Lindholm than most. But I owned him for a year and a half and was pretty disappointed. $5 million a year is steep for a guy who puts up 40 points and doesn’t do much else. If you don’t want Ferland then trade him for a pick - don’t overpay a complimentary middle six winger. Sven Baertchi can be had at the deadline.

Hanafin doesn’t seem as good defensively as Hamilton, but I don’t have any stats to back that up. I see Hamilton as a top 10 dman in the league, and Hanafin is a second pairing guy right now.

  5. Calgary got destroyed here. Hamilton is waaaay better than Hanafin will ever be, and Ferland is probably a shade better than Lindholm. Throw in a pretty good prospect and you’ve got a doozie.

I’d be hitting the veto button if this came through our site :)

My guess is that the Nucks end up with Hughes. In any case, here's my list:

    1. Dahlin
    2. Svechnikov
    3. Kotkaniemi
    4. Zadina
    5. Dobson
    6. Bouchard
    7. Hughes
    8. Tkachuk
    9. Wahlstrom
    10. Boqvist
    11. Hayton
    12. Smith
    13. Farabee
    14. Kravtsov
    15. Samuelsson
    16. Veleno
    17. Kupari
    18. Bokk
    19. Lundestrom
    20. Noel
    21. Sandin
    22. Denisenko
    23. Kaut
    24. Wilde
    25. Alexeyev
    26. Miller
    27. Merkley
    28. Dellandrea
    29. Thomas
    30. Berggren
    31. Woo

That would be great!  Dobson would work, too.

It's funny to me too...I remember the first time I heard the suggestion that the habs could grab kokoniemi(whatever his name is) as early as 3rd was on the radio about three weeks ago. It was a clip of Craig Button making the argument that he was a top five pick.

Since then everywhere I look he has been pushed up the board.

Does the former GM have that much pull in popular opinion?

I don't think he has influence, I think he's relaying to the public what he's hearing from scouts and GMs around the league.

I'd think rankings are adjusted because teams are looking at game tape.  Season is over so GMs and scouts have time to focus their attention, have debates and fine tune their lists.

if you ever go watch the Cougars in PG we have 2 kids playing there that played with my son in minor hockey. Austin Crossley and Conner Bowie. both are beauts. im gonna try and get down one weekend if they have 2 home games on the same weekend.

You must be from Ft St John then! It’s nice to have another northerner around.

I have young kids, so we can’t make most games. But we try to make it to the one or two day games they play a year, but it’s always a good time!

  9. Congrats to Ovie and the Caps!!  Glad to see the hard-hitting sniper win a cup.  If Ovie was Canadian I think he'd be the NHL's favourite player.

As a Holtby owner I'm glad he's the starter again :).

As someone in Prince George I'm psyched that Brett Connolly will bring the cup here!

(This is a thread about the Capitals, right?)

  10. Pekka is turning 36 this year.  They're going to have to move on from him sooner than later.  I can see them dealing with St. Louis, Philly or Carolina (maybe NYI/EDM) and then using the goalie they get back to tandem with Saros.

Somebody please explain these things to me.

    Las Vegas Knights????

The Duchene Jinx on Ottawa and Colorado?

    John Klingberg???

    Danton Heinen??

    Kopitar and Brown?

    The Oilers Woes??

    I’ll take a stab at a few.

    1) Fringe guys are better than most think. All they need is ice time and confidence of the organization.

This is why it’s so hard to evaluate prospects. Skill isn’t the only factor. Favour of the coach/GM is huge.

    2) Duchene isn’t that big of an upgrade over Turris. Turris knew the complicated system and it’ll take Duchene awhile to get it. The Sens got a lot of luck last year. Aaaand teams are starting to figure ways around Boucher’s systems.

    3/4) ???? Heinen’s shooting % is a little high...?

    5) Kopi has a bad year last year. This year he’s back to normal, and is getting a little luck.

    6) The Oilers traded their best wingers and now lack secondary scoring. They also still lack top pairing dmen. The league has also started to adjust to McDavid’s speed, but I’m sure he’ll figure things out.
