  1. As an Oilers fan with a completely objective take on Nurse... I think he's a top 30 Dman in the league, as in a low-end #1. He led the league in % time vs. elites last year and came out with a positive CF%. Granted, a lot of that time was with McDavid, but McD also hasn't had traditionally strong CF% numbers in the past. I feel like Nurse learned how to play defense last year at the cost of offense, and still has another step to go in tying both aspects together to become Doctor.

Contract could be better, but that's the price for the Oilers bridging him for so long. That said, I would tab him as a ~$7.75-8m guy right now with some upside yet, so hardly a bad overpay IMO.

  2. Hey all,

Usually regular updates take just a few minutes and no one's the wiser, but my web server guys need to do a fairly comprehensive database upgrade. Not sure exactly when this will occur, but it'll be after 9pm EST tonight and we could have 15-60 minutes of downtime.

    Thanks!

Update 1 - They got started earlier than expected, and the suggested fix did not work. This means we may have another short period of downtime when I get some free time either later tonight or tomorrow.

  3. Speaking as someone who's background is half-Ukrainian, and has (very) extended family and friends over there, I don't believe Festivus is advocating for apathy. There needs to be a lot of understanding that this has been a hell-ish couple of years for a lot of people, and it just seems to keep getting worse - having an outlet like Capwise that's free of everything else happening in the world may be really important to a lot of people. There are definitely more appropriate platforms to be angry on or have more in-depth conversations, but I also don't think we need to close off a conversation from happening here. There's just no need to make it personal while not knowing what else is going on in someone's life.

My piece? We do need to be angry, and we do need to be active. Many, many Russians are as well - thousands upon thousands have been risking being arrested, having their livelihoods ruined, and even their very lives in protesting the invasion. Yes, I wish they'd be able to go further and dispose of Putin, but there's a reason why he's maintained his totalitarian power for the last 22 years. This guy has been consolidating his power, has had no problem authorizing assassinations left and right, and has been building his influence globally. Many of these hockey families have very close ties to him, so while it's easy to suggest Ovechkin should speak out and take a hard stance, he'd straight-up be risking the lives of his loved ones. Would any of us be ready to risk our parents, significant others, families, etc. to do so?

I feel angry for everyone involved, as while the Ukrainians are paying the price right now, everyday Russians and hundreds of millions of others are going to suffer by proxy for one man's vanity for decades to come.

Mod note: I'll keep this thread open for now, but if this gets heated I'm shutting it down.

Two comments about the goalies. First, I can't believe the Habs are not paying off Seattle in some way, shape, or form, to make sure that they can keep Price.

I think there's a heck of a lot more yet to unfold on this front with the Habs and more. They just can't announce the trades yet until later today or tomorrow(?) - I'm not sure on the timing.

  5. Spoiler alerts, if you wanted to watch the "live" show later!

What are we all thinking of SEA's draft so far? I'll update this chart as we learn more but so far the team's rumoured to be looking like:

    ? - Gourde - Eberle
    McCann - ? - Donskoi
    Tanev - Blackwell - Appleton
    Jarnkrok - Geekie - Bastian
    Pitlick, Quenneville, Twarynski, Lind, True

    Giordano (traded?) - Larsson
    Dunn - Soucy (lefty)
    Oleksiak - Lauzon (lefty)
Cholowski, Borgen, MacDermid, Fleury, Fleury, Bayreuther

    Driedger
    Vanecek
    Daccord

  6. Hey all,

I realize the tournament is almost done, but I wanted to kick up a discussion thread asking about any players that are standing out for you. A lot of us are competitors here on Capwise, but I like to gain perspective on other NHL team's players I don't watch too closely.

To get us started, I think the most underrated player for Canada has been Philip Tomasino. Guy seems to be in the offensive zone and create something every time he's on the ice. Seems like he might be a great fit with Forsberg when he gets to Nashville.

I thought Noel Gunler was more prolific & impactful for Sweden than Holtz or Raymond, which surprised me. Elmer Söderblom was forced into the 1C role after Sweden lost their top 2 centers due to COVID, and he is a massive, massive human being. 6'8, and he's got some wheels. I didn't see the offensive upside but he might carve out a career ala Martin Hanzal with less offense. Bjornfot, Broberg and Soderstrom all look ready for the NHL or on the cusp.

Holy crap was that Czech team FAST. It's like they only took guys who were a 7/10 for speed or better. Stanislav Svozil looked really, really good and I bet he ends up being a top 15 draft pick next year.

Are there any semi-underrated players standing out for you folks?

This is a great thread - makes us all feel better about our mistakes. As for me, my worst was this one from 2018 in the PCFL. I gave away...

    Elias Lindholm

    Zach Werenski
    Josh Norris
    Kasperi Kapanen
    5th Round Amateur
    2019 2nd Am (GTP)

    And I recieved...

    Erik Haula

    Drew Doughty

    4th round amateur

    $2,500,000

Haula and Doughty were basically rentals. They weren't great ones, and in any event, I wasn't truly in contention that year. I can't really explain why I made this trade other than to say that it was a desperate, sad, and impulsive move. Naturally, it led to a trade report that involved Richie Rich backing up a Brinks truck: https://capwisehockey.com/forums/topic/2729-what-the-haula-just-happened-here/?tab=comments#comment-20321. "What the Haula Just Happened Here?" asked Thunder in the title. Good question, buddy. To this day, I have no freaking idea.

Holy crap did I ever sell high on Doughty in retrospect, hahaha. If it's any consolation, I went ahead and traded Lindholm right before his breakout with Calgary for a rental in Backstrom...
