apparently it's out of respect for college hockey as it's their first full slate of Friday Games.

I love NCAA hockey but it's very seldom on TSN, Sportsnet, RDS, or TVA. Anyone know of a website where I can stream the games? Would have love to see Hughes vs. Hughes last night.

Anyway, James raises a good point about the European games. They've certainly screwed up the standings with the disparities in games played. You'd the think teams that have only played two would have played last night to catch up.

  2. Ça sent la coupe!

Ok not really but still - impressive performances by the Habs against Toronto and Pittsburgh, two of the better teams in the league. This Montreal team may not have much talent, but so far it is showing that it has speed and hustle. This is going to be a rough year but at least they’re competing out there.

  3. I think this discussion illustrates the difficulty of finding the right “place” for fighting in the game.

Some people thought the NHL had done that by eliminating “staged” fights. But then you have situations like this one, where the question of whether Eller consented (either by taunting or trying to fight back) is certainly debatable.

We’re never going to find the right place for fighting in the game and we’re never going to all agree in situations like this.

I think that’s a very strong argument in favour of banning fighting altogether.

I hate to say it, and I don’t want to open up a much larger can of worms here... but as much as I love old time hockey, I think this incident and the discussion around it show that it’s time to move on.

Man .. Hard to believe this guy has played with some of the best from an era gone by. Yzerman, Federov, Hull, Shanahan, Manny Legace, Robitaille, Schneider, Chelios Hasek , Cujo. Datsyuk and Lidstrom more currently.

Fuckin detroit has been amazing over the years.

    Manny Legace?

Sad that we won’t get a chance to see Zetterberg for one more season, and that he won’t be able to mentor all the young guys in the twilight of his career. Seems that’s always been part of the model in Detroit.

Is this the 1st time an NHL player has been suspended for violating NHL rules on performing enhancing drug??

I believe Nicklas Backstrom was prevented from playing in the 2014 Olympic Final for taking pseudo-ephedrine but was ultimately cleared of any doping violation. Ulf Nilsson (another NHL player) doped in international competition.

As for guys who got suspended from NHL play, Sean Hill comes to mind. Interestingly, Bryan Berard tested positive for steroids he had taken during the NHL season, but was only suspended from international play.

  6. Unbelievable stat in La presse about Gibson: of all goalies having played at least 150 games since 1955-56, Gibson has the best career save percentage (.923). Dryden, Rask, and Hasek are all tied for second with .922. I would never have thought that Gibson belongs in the same conversation as Hasek (or even Dryden for that matter). With all that in mind, this is an excellent deal for Anaheim.

I agree, in year three it'll look a lot better.

Oh wow I did not notice the Modified NTC. Ouch.

Maybe Wilson’s 35 points was his breakout. I don’t think he’ll do more than that.

Me neither. A lot of guys could have put up those 35 points with his linemates. Sure, he made them better this season, but that's not worth anything close to a six-year commitment.

  8. Too many of us who grew up playing contact sports in the 90s (or earlier) have had incidents where we look back and realize we’ve had untreated concussions. Scary stuff - Veg’s story especially.

As for Crawford, beyond my fantasy interests, beyond rooting for a guy’s good health, and beyond rooting for a good kid from Chateauguay who proves that Quebecers can still play goal... I’d really like to see him come back because I’d like to know how much of a difference he can make on a team that’s not stacked.

its  hard to get out  when you still love  the game but , a  sane person would walk away

So he’s hockey’s Ricky Williams? I don’t know. So few guys have their life-after-hockey planned out and I think that’s what keeps a lot of them coming back. They just don’t know what else to do with themselves.

But I also think Crawford may have something left to prove. I bet he wants to show people he can be Roy rather than just Dryden. He’s won the Cup, but wouldn’t it be nice to steal it?
